Frequently asked questions
What does an SSL certificate do?
It encrypts traffic between the visitor's browser and the server, and proves the server's identity. The padlock icon in the browser address bar confirms a valid certificate.
How far in advance should I renew a certificate?
Renew at least 30 days before expiry. Let's Encrypt certificates last 90 days; most commercial certificates last one or two years.
What is a wildcard certificate?
A wildcard covers the main domain and all first-level subdomains. For example, *.example.com covers mail.example.com and shop.example.com.
Why does the tool show 'certificate chain incomplete'?
The server is not sending all intermediate certificates needed to verify trust. This can cause browser warnings for some visitors even if the certificate itself is valid.
